Presentations, Round II

We'll have a series of short presentations on papers that you've found and read. On the first day (today), we'll hear from CP, AK, CA, and EK. On the second day, we'll hear from MY, CF, MO, and TR, and NH.

Your target is roughly 7-10 minutes of presentation. You should read this piece by Ashwin Ram about how to do this. It is short, and to the point. A few slides, perhaps with key figures, will go a long way to helping us understand the paper.

Choosing a Paper

Good resources for finding a paper of interest:

  • The ACM Digital Library. Google for the title of any paper you find there and find interesting; you might be able to find the PDF on the author's website, for example. If not, send me the DOI from the ACM DL, and I'll get the PDF for you.

  • CiteSeer. Many of the papers listed in CiteSeer also come with full text.

  • OS: 3 Easy Pieces. The back of every chapter has references for excellent papers in the are of the chapter. If you see a topic you want to know more about, 1) read the chapter, and 2) read one or more of those papers.

  • USENIX. The Proceedings is a good place to look. They have a search interface, or you can browse by conference.

  • Google Scholar. This is pretty broad; it's a shotgun approach. However, you might find papers of interest.

Presentation Tools

You're welcome to use:

  • Google Docs. This makes my life easy for later assessment, because you can just share it with jadudm.berea.

  • Slid.es. Your presentation will be public if you use this tool.

  • Open Office. I'd rather not deal with files, but if you must, you must.

That is, using some cloud-based solution where you just share it with me, or send me a URL, is much preferred. Ultimately, do as you will.
