Introduction to Robotics

Could a robot be a "killer"?

Objectives

Although this assignment must be completed individually, you may consult with one another.
Before next time, do the following:
  1. Read the second installment in the Case of the Killer Robot: KillerRobot-2.pdf
  2. Read the historic news article "$10 Million Awarded To Family Of U.S. Plant Worker Killed By Robot", Ottawa Citizen, August 11, 1983, p14.
  3. Read the fairly recent news article: Robot kills man at Volkswagen plant in Germany, The Telegraph, July 2, 2015.
  4. Watch the recent video http://www.wnd.com/2015/07/robot-kills-man-at-volkswagen-plant/
  5. Watch the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOCmoYU6h1Q

Create a new Microsoft Word or text document named YourUserName-A3.

In your Word document, you will answer the following questions.   Be sure to answer each question fully in a paragraph made from complete sentences.

  1. Briefly summarize installment #2 in the Case of the Killer Robot (KillerRobot-2.pdf)
  2. The the Case of the Killer Robot is a work of fiction which is based on real issues. Compare the power and capabilities of the industrial robot described in the second installment in the Case of the Killer Robot with what you can infer about the power and capabilities of the industrial robot in the news articles $10 Million Awarded To Family Of U.S. Plant Worker Killed By Robot and Robot kills man at Volkswagen plant in Germany, and the power you can see in the robotic arm in the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOCmoYU6h1Q.  Do you see any similarities?  Any important differences?  Use a paragraph to explain.
  3. Reflect on safety aspects of the type of heavy industrial robotic equipment discussed above. Organize your reflection in three paragraphs to  represent the following points of view:
    • If your son or daughter was a worker at a company which uses heavy robotic equipment, what kind of safeguards would you expect to be in place to keep workers safe? Explain.
    • If you were the owner of a company which uses heavy robotic equipment, what kind of safeguards would you want to put in place to keep workers safe?  Do these differ from your previous answer?  Explain.
    • If you were the owner of a company which manufactured and programmed heavy robotic equipment, what kind of product-testing and safeguards would you want to put in place? Do these differ from your previous two answers?  Explain.
When you are finished, save the file as YourUserName-A3 and submit the file to the appropriate location in Moodle.
